Robert J. Marzano offers a glimpse of how teachers can lead change and transform schools. In his book Teaching for Social Justice, he describes what is needed to give our students the tools to be global citizens. In his follow-up book Leading Social Justice, Marzano shares his experiences and wisdom as he leads his own school, moves a school, and organizes for change. He takes you inside the schools and classrooms where he lives and works.
Some school districts have found that there is no need for a book ban, when it comes to restricting materials that are considered lewd or pornographic. In the St. Louis County School District in Missouri, a sexual education book was removed from a 9th grade health class, although the removal occurred after the teacher was trained on the subject matter and the book did not include any sexual content. A teacher in the Orinda Unified School District in California was disciplined and removed from her position after she read a book to her students about family planning. The book was part of a class on human sexuality and was part of an elective that covered topics such as contraception and abstinence.
School policies against the distribution of sexually explicit materials to minors can also be problematic. In the town of San Francisco, officials banned the books and magazines Little by Little, Big Sister, Big Sisters, Bully-Free Zone, and Scary Girls because they were determined to be “sexually explicit.” In a recent case in Washington State, a school district banned the sex toy book The Best Sex Toys for Couples. The book was considered objectionable because it included “spicy, sexually explicit language” and “images and text that may offend or disturb.” 827ec27edc
