All of our fabrics are photo-tested, as we understand the importance of cosplays photographing well. We use fabric blends to minimize flashback on certain fabrics, to make sure none of the fabrics look cheap. We also use a variety of finishes on our foils, knits, and stretch fabrics, to mimic the look of different materials such as latex or leather.

With coronavirus quarantines and many stores still remaining closed, finding fabrics in person has become an adventure of its own. Luckily, online shopping can bring the fabrics safely to your door. While every cosplayer knows JoAnn Fabrics, their stock can be limiting at times and being the most recognized fabric store in the US, stocking issues during quarantines have frustrated many customers. Let me give you a list of other fabric resources to give a chance.
The name really says it all. This is an obvious choice for online fabric shopping. They have a wide selection of fabric choices organized by color, type, purpose and even specialty shops (bridal, swimwear, team, ect). Outside of fabrics, the store has a notions section for thread, trims, buttons and more. With such a huge selection of items, they have a wide range of prices to fit all budgets.
While known for providing hard to find fabrics for a variety of uses (think cheeseclothes and silver polishing fabrics), Vogue Fabrics also offers fabric by the yard with specific sections for cosplay and steampunk themes. They are also a great resource for historical patterns.
For cosplayers looking for historically accurate fabrics, Period Fabric has a wide selection of types and patterns based on US historical periods while Renaissance Fabrics specializes in wool, silk, linen and cotton fabrics perfect for European historical costumes.
Always get swatches. It may be an extra cost and add a bit of time to your finished project being completed but can save you money and time in purchasing the correct fabric the first time around.
Now a days I have about 3 wardrobes full of fabric, several boxes with ready to go materials to build several characters, a cabinet full of bits and bobs and countless scrap pieces of all shapes and colours. Basic fabric is not that expensive at all, and if you know where to look it can be pretty affordable. If you have decided to start making cosplays you will be needing it at some point. It is true that you can get away with old clothes and a bit of imagination with some projects like armours but at some point you are going to be needing that fabric for one of your projects. Here is where you can find it.
Is there a local store near me Probably yes! Most big cities will have not one but many stores that sell fabric. And many small cities too! Just take a look at google maps ,you will be surprised. There may be a local shop around the corner. Obviously big stores will have a bigger range. Also, big stores usually have bigger discounts but sometimes you can find the best deals in the smallest ones.
Be aware that not all stores are the same and make sure to shop around. Some of them will specialise in a type of fabric and others will have sections. A store specialised on wedding fabrics will be more expensive but will have amazing quality. One that specialises on fancy dress will have all kinds of weird materials and will be cheaper, but the quality will not always be the best. Make sure you know your textiles before you commit.
If you are not sure of where to look I made a full list of retailers that sell fabric online in the UK, most of them sell internationally! I added lots of extra details like shipping price or style so you could choose the best seller for your project.
Long ago, on my quest to find where to buy fabric for cosplay I stumbled upon the local street markets. They are paradise. That is of course, if you are not looking for something in particular. Local markets have all kinds of stuff and you can buy amazing cheap fabric there. However, you may never been able to find the same offer twice.
When looking at fabrics, they will be defined by the way they are created (knit vs. woven fabrics) and the type of material used to make them (cotton, polyester, wool, etc.). Because of the way they are made, the edges of knit materials tend to fray less than woven materials.
When you first start, you will probably want to aim for woven fabrics. These are easier for beginners to learn how to use and will be a good choice for most characters, as long as they are not wearing a skin-tight suit.
My name is Emily, and I have been Cosplaying Since my very first convention in 2008. Over the years I've learned a lot of new skills that have helped me become better and making cosplay and looking good for the camera.
For complex patterns, make a mockup (test piece) out of plain cotton fabric to test the pattern. For the actual garment, use a fashion fabric that is easy to cut and sew and that does not warp easily.
Soft, light-weight fabrics like chiffon and organza are perfect for flowy drapes. When using sheer or white fabric for any other part of a costume, you may need to back it up with interfacing or a second layer of fabric (like cotton broadcloth) unless you specifically want it to be transparent.
Pre-wash and iron all of your fabrics before you cut and sew them. This will pre-shrink the fabric (natural fibers like cotton shrink by up to 10% the first time you wash them!), it will get rid of the chemicals and intense colors will bleed much less the second time you wash them.
Easy-to-clean, long-lasting fabrics include: most cottons and cotton blends, stretch fabric (especially spandex) and polyester broadcloth. The price really makes a difference here: when given a choice, I prefer high-quality fashion fabric for clothing and sportswear over decorative fabric and cheap (halloween-quality) costume fabric.
Lycra / spandex is available in a vast range of colors and qualities if you know where to look. I got these beautiful color charts and fabric swatches from dance supply store Giffels (Germany) and Spandex World (U.S.).

When it comes to cosplay, everyone wants to look their best. It makes sense: you are recreating the image of your favorite movie, television show, comic book, anime, or popular culture character to be for a day. Many people wear their cosplays to conventions to show off their hard work and authenticity for other fans. Some people wear cosplay as part of a live-action roleplaying game or hobby. No matter the reason, there are a lot of considerations to make when creating an authentic costume. You must consider the type of costume, the necessary materials, any accessories, and any other aspect of the costume itself, not to mention your budget. With all this, choosing the right fabric for your cosplay is equally essential. Anybody going to their first cosplay event should read on to find which material works best for them.
Cotton is a soft natural fiber native to tropical and subtropical parts of the world. It is one of the universally popular fabrics in the world, with a history dating back to 6000 BCE. With cosplay, cotton is comfortable, soft, and easy to wear. It has natural alkalis, which give it an acid resistance. However, it is weak and crumples easily. Keep in mind that not every cotton strand is the same, meaning you can get thick cotton one time and one that wrinkles easily the next.
This is a naturally occurring fabric from sheep hair. The naturally occurring crimps provide the wool with a soft and spongy feel. Specifically, wool is one of the best fibers to wear all year round because it warms the wearer in the cold and cools them in the heat. It also has natural UV protection, which is useful for outside events. The natural elasticity makes wool durable and resilient to wear. Still, keep in mind for your next cosplay idea that wool is pricier and more difficult to wash than other fabrics.
Synthetic fibers hold up far better than natural fabrics due to the chemical process that creates them, but there are also some issues you might run into. Most synthetic fibers stretch, resist water and stains, and are hardier against oil, sunlight, and general wear and tear. On the other hand, they can burn more readily, melt, shrink, and are not biodegradable. Additionally, synthetic fibers can cause allergic reactions and general discomfort more than natural fibers.
Getting exactly the look you want and achieving knock-out special effects can be as simple as weathering or painting on fabric, but strategically damaging or adding paint to your costume can be intimidating - what if you get it wrong! Many cosplayers are adept at sewing up costumes but have no idea how to add details and effects that help tell a story. Marquise Cubey (Julianna Franchini), a veteran cosplayer and industry expert, demystifies paint, tools, and techniques to help you add fabric painting and weathering to your arsenal of costume effects! 59ce067264
